History of Hot Stone Massage
Hot stones have been used in massage for over 4000 years. The Chinese have been treating themselves and others for thousands of years with hot stones to ease muscular pain. The Japanese put hot stones on their abdomens to aid digestion. In Roman baths, people had the choice to lay on tables with hot or cold stones. In America, native women placed a warm stone on their belly during their menstruation.
Until fairly recent times, hot stones were placed at the foot end of the bed to warm the feet. When hot stones are arranged along the chakras of the body, healing can take place.
Hot Stone Massage was also known in Hawaii, and made popular in the US by Mary Hannigan around 1993, who developed the LaStone Therapy.
