Pregnancy massage is tailored to the requirements of pregnant woman. Massage during pregnancy is also called antenatal massage. The massage usually lasts about one hour. It is generally recommended to start pregnancy massage after week 13 because of the higher risk of miscarriage in the first trimester.
The student will place bolsters and pillows to ensure the most comfortable position for a pregnant woman. Lying face down prone is a big no-no. When lying face down and massage is performed, the applied pressure might lead to increased pressure on the uterus which should be avoided. Pregnant woman will be positioned semi-reclined or lying on their side.
Students will avoid deep massage or pressure over certain pressure points. Effleurage is OK. Also, deeper massage is contra-indicated in the 3rd trimester if the client has a heart condition. No tapotement (Hacking, cupping, etc.) is to be given on the legs of a pregnant woman due to the higher risk of blood clots.
